Personality: First impressions of Asa generally include such adjectives as aloof, unconcerned, even callous. However, first impressions aren't always accurate; Asa feels and reacts quite a bit, it's just the simple matter that much of it is kept neatly under control. They're often quite laid-back, and keep their head about them in times of crisis--Asa isn't the sort to get rattled easily.

They're more inclined to tell what they're thinking and feeling rather than letting actions speak for them, and thus open the door for misunderstandings. With words, they can be certain they're perfectly clear, which leads to another point: Asa is someone who has been looked down upon often enough in the past, whose words weren't headed and whose needs weren't met, that they prefer to quickly get to the point and make certain the person in question will do as requested. This is probably where a lot of the impressions of being callous and uncaring come from.

This also partly leads to Asa's tendency of being very direct and to the point; they know what they want or need and little can deter them from their goals and ambitions, plus after centuries of dealing with ineffective governments and conquests, their patience runs thin. One can't expect a job done right without taking the reins themselves.

However, among Southerners it's the Easterners that are know for being a fiery people, ones known for emotions running high and a temper to go with it. Asa is not very Eastern. They were born and raised in the West, and rather than being so temperamental, they tend towards keeping a cooler head and a calmer--even more laid-back--attitude. Though they may come across as strict and harsh, they're also equally willing to forgive or lend a helping hand if it's needed--they'll get more annoyed at someone not admitting to needing aid rather than the one who owns up to it.

Still when push comes to shove too much their temper makes itself known. Even then, Asa's anger is less fire and more ice--less explosive arguments and more cold shoulders and sharp glances. Contrary to the East, they lead more with their head than their heart.

The history of the West is often a bloody one, colonizers carving out land and removing the people, and even more conflicts to conquer and establish order as the colonized try to re-gain what once was there's. As such, Asa has a stronger sense of justice and of fighting for what one has claimed as their own--or fighting to take it back.

To those who manage to get close, they can be surprisingly sweet and thoughtful in their own little ways. Asa may be more likely to simply say "in case of emergency: good luck" than offer very comforting words, but they'll also offer a shoulder to lean on--they've never known coddling, and so one must expect tough love out of them.
